Rainbow Amateur Netball League received a boost when Glow Petroleum announced that it is  increasing its sponsorship of netball for another four years. The sponsorship, which runs for five years, is now worth US$500 000 from US250 000 as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.

The sponsorship covers league teams and general support to day-to-day running of the leagues, and will also include the developmental aspects.

Speaking at the inaugural end of year netball awards, Glow Petroleum managing director Aaron Chinhara, said gone are the days when netball was viewed as a social sport with the players not getting anything for their work.

Chinhara said sport provides an exciting platform on which to build our brand and women’s sport presents an excellent channel for this.

“Glow Petroleum is a growing brand and a force to reckon with in the fuel industry. In its growth, it has recorded success in business and the corporate world especially in its corporate social responsibility goals.

“In empowering the girl child and in lobbying for her basic rights, Glow Petroleum has moved with the motto “Let’s act today, do for a better tomorrow”, in a bid to empower the girl child at national and in this particular regard at sporting level.

Chinhara added: “We have decided to sponsor netball instead of any other sport because we realised that every other company that wants to sponsor sport always think of other hugely followed disciplines like football, rugby and cricket but they don’t think about this traditional and girl child sport, netball.

“In order for netball not to die we need to incentivise the girl child
and we promise to be with you throughout.

“We have therefore decided to pour US$250 000 as a start but will add another additional US$250 000 for the 2019 Rainbow Netball League.”

Chinhara revealed that the fuel company’s corporate social responsibility was aimed at giving girls exposure while emulating personalities like Sports Minister Kirsty Coventry.

“Empowering of the girl child through netball also means a healthiest family and nation as it advances goals of physical education in school and tertiary institution. It also resonates to us adults in taking up sports for the promotion of our physical well-being.

“As part of our corporate social responsibility, we joined hands with RANL. At the inception we donate $250 000, which supported the tournaments and other activities that assist netball.

“As the year went by we continued to sponsor the league to an extent that our donation surpasses $300 000. As we approach the 2019 season, we continue in empowering the girl child through with another donation of $250 000 to sustain its projects.
