My name is Munashe Matambo, a proud youth and citizen of Zimbabwe. This year will be my first time participating in the national elections of this country. This will officially become the first huge action that I will do which I feel will impact this nation’s future. I have been an observer in the subsequent 2008 and 2013 state elections. I should note firstly that, as humans, studying our past has helped us anticipate and prepare for our future.

As a youth of this great Nation, if asked what I have learnt from the past state elections – all I would say is it’s the time when I hear the loudest cries and see the most tears from the poor especially women, the time when people whisper their thoughts in fear and their voice is proved not to be a matter of concern and the time when I feel this country is really not independent after all.

Despite, our embarrassing economic, social and political beat down over the years, my view of this year’s elections is different – I am optimistic and so are my peers. With the coming in of the new dispensation that is singing the mantra “Zimbabwe is open for business”, all lost hope is revived.

I feel people are more active this year than ever before.
There is no whispering in fear, there are no cries, no whips and for once, freedom is in the atmosphere. It seems everyone is so focused in rebuilding this country.

I also think whichever leader the majority would have chosen would surely be deserving to be on the Presidential seat.

That being said, I am sure whoever becomes the next President will be working according ‘to’ and ‘for’ the people.

My view is that this year’s elections will be free and fair. This comes as the President has invited various International organisations such as EU to help monitor and ensure that elections are as deserved as can be.

From my own point of view, I don’t see any way that a party will be able to rig the elections this year. It might be possible but chances have been narrowed down.
What is saddening is that I do not feel that electoral parties are taking advantage of this ‘fairness’ door presented to them.

I mean, these are the first elections in my account as a youth that significant effort has been put. One would surely expect seeing parties campaigning hard like never before because these are the only elections that are closest to being truthful.

Maybe parties need to be reminded that in these upcoming elections, the biblical phrase, “You reap what you sow” is surely applicable. People had gotten used to the fact that elections were autocratic.
