Hwange MD resigns Thomas Makore

HARARE – Suspended Hwange Colliery Company Limited (HCCL) managing director, Engineer Thomas Makore has resigned.

Makore had been suspended by the HCCL board on May 14, pending a disciplinary hearing. According to our sister paper the Herald Business, Makore was facing “charges of undermining the authority of the board and unethical business conduct.”

HCCL announced the resignation in a statement today:

“The board of Hwange Colliery Company Limited wishes to advise all stakeholders and the public in general of the resignation of Mr Stenjwa Thomas Makore as the managing director of the company with effect from 23 May 2018.”

Makore has been the managing director at HCCL since June 2014.

According to Bloomberg Profiles, he currently serves as serves as managing director of Spescom Media IT.

He has been has been the CEO of Spescom Telecommunications Operations since October 21, 2005.

Makore joined Spescom Group in March 2005. He also holds senior executive positions at Siemens and Diebold.

He is a professional engineer with extensive business and marketing experience in the power, IT and ICT sectors.

Makore started his career as a graduate trainee with Triangle Limited in 1989 before assuming managerial responsibilities within the company. He then moved on to join telecoms giant Siemens Limited working at both South African and German operations and rising through various positions to the position of divisional managing director in 2001.

He then went on to join information and communication technology firm Diebold South Africa(Pty) Limited as managing director in 2004 before joining Spescom Holdings Limited as CEO for Spescom Telecommunication.

In 2011 he joined Cummins SA (Pty) Limited as commercial director overseeing Southern Africa operations before settling for full time consultancy in Energy and Telecoms.

He served as a Director of Hwange Colliery Company Limited. He is registered with various professional institutions including ECSA, SAIEE, UK Engineering Council and the IEE and holds a BSc Eng Hons Electrical and a Masters of Business Leadership.

He holds a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Zimbabwe and a Masters of Business Leadership degree from the University of South Africa.

He is a member of the Institute of Engineering Technology (UK), South African Institute of Electrical Engineers, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (US) and is a Chartered Engineer.
