The National Gallery of Zimbabwe will celebrate its 60th Anniversary today, Friday 14 July 2017 and has lined up celebratory events and activities on the day with exhibitions to expand on the gallery’s incorporation throughout the dedicatory month.

Familiar Histories is an exhibition where artists tap into their own history with a lens that covers each and every generation of artist.

The access to the histories which are presented in the exhibition has both the urban and the rural narration; with ironies that are embedded therein creating the artists’ view of the future.

“Each work on this exhibition brings in a familiar story of Africa”, said the curator of the exhibition, Raphael Chikukwa.

The keystone exhibition on the day will be Unpacking the Vision: From Rembrandt to Mubayi¸ in memory of the National Gallery’s very first exhibition, called From Rembrandt to Picasso.

This eminent exhibition will boast the best works from the Permanent Collection, while infusing the classic with the modern in one stride.

The masters of local art shall be showcased alongside the international greats, in a way to reflect on the strides the institution has made in collecting for the nation over the past six decades.

In line with the tune of the celebration, the spaces within the gallery; namely the Sculpture Garden, PG, East, South, West and North Galleries shall be renamed after legendary first and second generation sculptors.

This honour is being accorded to these late artists as they were instrumental in the development of contemporary Zimbabwean art.

The artists to be honoured were also instrumental in developing breakthrough techniques and innovative works that secured the attention of art lovers around the world.

Lastly, the Zimbabwe Art Book, a publication which presents the local section of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe’s Permanent Collection, will be launched on that evening. The book features descriptive analyses of works, ranging from Azevedo to Zvavahera.

The imagery therein features the country’s best paintings, sculptures, illustrations, photographs and installations.

Published by the House of Books, the book will feature over 350 pages of rich quality images with biographical information- setting it as both a coffee table book and to some extent, a good reference document for the academic reader.

The National Gallery of Zimbabwe invites members of public to celebrate with it during this occasion. The theme for the Gallery’s milestone festivities is “Brilliant, Shining, Forever” resonating with the organisation’s unmatched track record in the arts; vision for the future and overall outlook as it gears up for its thematically apt diamond jubilee carousal.

Fridays will see free entrance into the gallery for all members of the public.
