HARARE – The value of transactions processed through the National Payment System (NPS) for the week ending July 20, 2018 declined to $2, 96 billion, from $2, 97 billion recorded in the previous week on the back of lower volumes of Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) transactions.

According to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)’s latest figures:

“During the week ending 20th July 2018, the total value of transactions processed through the National Payments System (NPS) stood at $2, 96 billion, a decline from the $2, 97 billion recorded in the previous week.

“The value of transactions processed through the RTGS system, however, increased by 0, 4 percent, to close the week under review at $2, 02 billion, representing 68, 18 percent of the total value of transactions processed through the NPS,” highlighted the apex bank.

Meanwhile, the rest of the transaction values processed through the NPS were distributed as follows: Mobile accounted for 23, 16 percent, while Point-of-Sale (POS) accounted for 8, 57 percent and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) accounted for 0, 06 percent.

Cheque transactions accounted for just 0, 03 percent of all transactions.

The RBZ said transaction volumes processed through the NPS declined by 4, 3 percent to close the week under review at 41 693 605 transactions.

The transactions volumes were distributed as follows: Mobile at 82, 94 percent; POS at 16, 69 percent; RTGS at 0, 27 percent; ATM at 0, 09 percent and Cheque transactions at 0, 01 percent.

Increase in the use of electronic payment methods has been necessitated by a general shortage of cash in the local economy.
