Time surely does fly!
Another year is about to close and it looks like we will soon go back to the planning board in terms of new resolutions. Doomsday predictions are starting to increase and the old adage that time flies is working overtime.
But of course, this is a fashion column and therefore, I will talk about the accessory that ties up perfectly with my intro.
There is one fashion accessory that is always ignored, but which helps in the day-to-day activities.
It is not a bow-tie, hair clip, necklace, bracelet, pocket square or the ring but the wrist-watch.
Wrist-watches are a must have especially to those who go to work and have busy schedules.
And you got to know; keeping track of time remains important in today’s world.
As clocks become omnipresent on smart phones and other devices, you may wonder if wearing a watch makes sense, but there are several good reasons to keep wearing a watch in the professional world.
While a watch is helpful, it is ultimately an accent or accessory to your style.
If you have a limited budget, there is no need to get into debt to purchase a Rolex.
A lamentable shift has happened in the last few decades where the watch suddenly seemed old-fashioned as cellphones became more common.
And they suddenly disappeared from men’s wrists.
Who needs a watch when you can just pull your phone out to check the time on a sleek digital display?
Once upon a time, a watch was a necessity, something men and women put on their wrists every morning and took off only at night before going to bed.
It was a necessity, or else you wouldn’t know the time of day and you’d be late for all of your meetings.
A watch is the only accessory that a man can truly wear every day.
You can build a collection, swap them out for different outfits, change straps to suit the occasion, and find one that’s perfectly suited to you and your lifestyle.
By the way, it’s your own signature piece — something that you wear so often that people end up identifying it with you. Even a smartwatch is better than no watch — though, depending on the model, it will send its own unique message.
According to workplace fashion stylist Micheal Runn, when you don’t wear a watch, you’re missing out on that opportunity.
“On days I forget my watch, my outfit feels incomplete, like it’s missing something.
A watch can really tie it all together.
“Now, I’m no technological skeptic — I love my iPhone 6, I’m addicted to Spotify, and for me, Snapchat is less a social network than a hobby.
“Still, a watch on the wrist holds tangible benefits for the wearer that go beyond telling the time.
“In fact, I rarely find myself looking down at my watch to actually find out what time it is,” he said during the style session on the importance of wrist watches at work.
A watch symbolises time much more than a smartphone does.
More to the point, it reminds you that time is constantly moving and slipping away — so you better get living and do all those things you’re planning.
Just to help you, here are seven reasons why people who wear watches are generally more successful:
1. They have elegant style.
In most companies and in most situations, there are benefits to having elegant style.
Putting on a dress watch is a perfect accessory to finish off a suit and tie.
Wearing a watch with a metal band or a high quality leather band is often a good choice.
Business Closet tip is that, a good rule of thumb is to wear watches with a metal body with suits and dress clothes. Leave the plastic and rubber watches at home or for children, those watches are best for exercise, swimming and other activities.
2. They know how to impress in job interviews.
During a job interview, it is important to leave a good impression.
Mark Horstman, co-founder of Manager Tools, recommends wearing a watch to interviews.
He makes this recommendation because managing time in an interview is important.
Checking your watch in that setting is a subtle gesture.
If you check the time by pulling out your phone, the interviewer may think you are checking your email and that’s a fast way to create a poor impression.
3. They appreciate good quality.
Successful people know the importance of buying and using high quality products.
That’s why many successful people will pay $100, $500 or over $1 000 for a watch.
It is worth spending on a quality watch, especially one with a classic style that will never go out of fashion.
James Bond wore Rolex watches in the 1960s and those watches continue to be in demand, even at auctions.
4. They wear the right watch for the right occasion.
You may have multiple watches for different purposes.
Marathon runners, swimmers and other athletes often wear water proof watches that can take punishment and continue to function. If you are going to attend an evening event with other professionals, it makes sense to wear a dress watch, which is a fancy one that will make other guests drool or just say, “excuse me, what is the time”.
5. They know how to adapt.
There are some industries that do not care much about watches.
It is common to wear a simple watch like the Timex or the Citizen if you work in the heavy industries.
If you are in an organization full of engineers or technology types, you might find that wearing an Apple Watch is a better choice if you want to fit in and if you are a fashion savvy even in the newsroom, Rolex and Justin are also common.
Anyway, since I am a watch person, I wouldn’t know some of the disadvantages of not wearing a watch. But time is money except that you can’t make more. You can, however, maximise each and every second you spend.
Make sure you know the correct outfit and the correct time.
