After the successful Zimbabwe Amateur held last week at Bulawayo Country Club, focus is on the Bata Power Open in Gweru from August 25 to 27.

But for now, Kersten Justin is the name. That Zimbabwe Golf Association confirmed that they will be selecting players based on form and not order of merit for the All Africa Golf Championships, makes it more interesting.

Four top amateurs will be selected to represent the country end of this month. The championships, to be hosted by Zimbabwe in Victoria Falls, at Elephant Hills, will take place from October 8-14.

Announcement of the team will give the association a bit of time to try and give the golfers the necessary support they need. The Hillside Masters in September will take place when the team has already been selected and could help as part of the preparation.

On the Sunshine Tour, Zimbabweans Mark Williams, Greg Bentley and Mohammad Rauf Mandhu are part of the Vodacom Origins at Arabella Country Club. Last year Vaughn Groenewald won by a nine-under-par 207 score. According to the Sunshine Tour, it will be difficult for Groenewald to hold on to his title.

“This week’s event is the second in a six-tournament series sponsored by Vodacom and a title-defence is not going to be a walk in the park for Groenewald. With many players getting back into the swing of things after the seven-week break in June and July, every field from now on becomes a more difficult challenge to overcome.”

One of the big names at the Vodacom Origins at Arabella Country Club is Shaun Norris who was having a good time internationally. He was victorious at the Japan Golf Tour Championship.

“I’m really looking forward to getting back to the Sunshine Tour and seeing my friends again. The Sunshine Tour is really like a big family and I received so many messages of support from other players when I was at The Open. It was wonderful,” Norris was quoted as saying.

The tournament started on August 17 and ends on the 19th.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Rugby Sevens Golf Day at Chapman Friday on August 18, is a welcome fundraising event. It’s good to be back at Chapman supporting a national cause!
